Representatives Frost, Moskowitz, Goldman, Urge Congressional Leadership to Immediately Hold Classified Briefing for Members of Congress on Mass Shootings

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representatives Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-Florida), Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida), and Dan Goldman (D-New York) sent the following letter to Congressional Leadership urging them to immediately organize a classified briefing for Members of Congress on mass shootings in America.

With these tragic events becoming so common, Frost, Moskowitz, and Goldman are concerned that Members of Congress have become desensitized to the true horror of each one and the impact they have on the victims, their loved ones, and the community.

A copy of the letter is found here and below:

The Honorable Kevin McCarthy

Speaker of the House

The Honorable Hakeem Jeffries

Minority Leader

U.S. House of Representatives

Dear Speaker McCarthy and Leader Jeffries:

The devastating reality of gun violence in America makes it impossible to even process one mass shooting before another one is perpetuated. We are only 25 days into 2023 and there have already been 39 mass shootings according to the Gun Violence Archive. Seventy people have lost their lives and another 167 have been injured. When these tragic events become so common, we risk becoming desensitized to the true horror of each one and the impact they have on the victims, their loved ones, and the community.

As a result of this proliferation of mass shootings, we are writing to request a classified briefing for Members of Congress from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other relevant agencies, on massshootings in America. As Vice Chairs of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, we believe it is the responsibility of elected officials to confront the horrific reality that many of our constituents are forced to face, and to determine a common-sense path forward towards stopping the epidemic of mass shootings our country faces.

We thank you for your consideration of this request. It is our sincere hope that such a briefing will have bipartisan attendance, educate Members on mass shootings, and help us come together to find bipartisan solutions.

Sincerely,

Jared Moskowitz         Maxwell Alejandro Frost         Dan Goldman
