Congressman Maxwell Statement on H.Res. 1102

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost (FL-10) released a statement on H.Res. 1102 the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024.

In a statement, Rep. Frost says:

“For months, House Republicans have held our government hostage, threatening to defund our operations and bring our country and economy to a halt. Today I’m thankful that we have once again avoided a shutdown disaster of the Republican party’s own making – but as the Haitian refugee crisis surges, I am severely disappointed by the immigration compromises House Republicans forced us to accept in order to keep the government open.

“In the bill we voted on today, Republicans prioritized a continuation of the harmful attacks we have seen on vulnerable migrants that fuel the disgusting, bigoted rhetoric being weaponized to prevent any real reform on immigration.

“H.Res. 1102 expands ICE’s detention capacity by nearly 25 percent, adds more Border Patrol agents, and crushes any hope migrants could have about receiving understanding and compassion after their dangerous journey in pursuit of freedom.

“In Florida, we know what it looks like to lack compassionate leadership towards innocent immigrants as Ron DeSantis uses, tricks, and trafficks migrants for his own political gain. Leaders across Central Florida and the people of my community are sick and tired of bills that do nothing to address the root cause of our broken immigration system, but simply criminalize and demonize immigrants.

“I came to Congress to help address the major problems facing my state and country. I refuse to place a bandaid on our immigration system when what we need is reform. That’s why I voted no.”
