Congressman Maxwell Frost Announces Nearly $3 Million in Federal Funding to Eliminate Traffic Fatalities in Orlando
Grants from U.S. Department of Transportation Will Help Fund Metroplan Orlando and Orange County Plans to Enhance Street Safety
ORLANDO, FL – Today, U.S. Representative Maxwell Alejandro Frost (FL-10) announced a nearly $3 million federal grant to Central Florida from the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safer Streets and Roads for All grant program.
Specifically, over $2.1 million was awarded to Metroplan Orlando to support their work to save lives by reaching zero traffic deaths and serious injuries in the region through the implementation of new transportation safety plans. DOT additionally awarded over $850,000 to Orange County to expand the county’s efforts to understand safety issues and reduce the most severe crash types and conditions.
According to a study by Smart Growth America, Florida was home to eight of the top 20 deadliest cities for pedestrians in the country, with Orlando ranked at 18.
“This nearly $3 million in federal funding to Central Florida will serve as a major investment towards our future as a more walkable, safer city for all,” said Congressman Maxwell Frost. “Whether you’re driving, walking, biking, scooting, or taking the bus – our roads need to keep you safe and work for you, not against you.”
