Frost, Webster Hurricane Preparedness Legislation Crosses Major Hurdle As Science, Space, and Tech Committee Includes it in Weather Act, Passes Committee

WASHINGTON D.C — Today, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-FL-10) announced that his bipartisan bill with Congressman Daniel Webster (R-FL-11), the Fixing Gaps in Hurricane Preparedness Act (H.R. 6080), was successfully included as an amendment to the Weather Act Reauthorization Act, focused on strengthening the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) work to advance the U.S. weather system.

The Frost, Webster bill, which passed the Committee unanimously as an amendment, would ensure that hurricane preparedness tools, alerts, and planning systems would address the needs of seniors, people with disabilities, non-English speakers, and rural and urban populations by requiring NOAA to review how these populations receive and react to emergency notifications and evaluate how these folks are able to prepare themselves in the event of a hurricane.

“The Weather Act Reauthorization is lifesaving legislation which will allow our communities to be better prepared for all kinds of weather,” said Rep. Maxwell Frost. “I’m proud that my bipartisan bill with Rep. Webster, the Fixing Gaps in Hurricane Preparedness Act, was successfully included in this large legislative package to ensure that vulnerable folks like seniors, those with disabilities, and non-English speakers have the knowledge and tools they need to safely make it through a hurricane or any other kind of severe storm. This legislation will save Floridian lives and I look forward to it being passed by the full House and signed into law.”
