Congressman Maxwell Frost Joins House Leadership and Gun Violence Prevention Task Force in Push to Bring Gun Reform Legislation to Floor
WASHINGTON D.C — Today, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost (FL-10) joined House Democratic Leadership and Members of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force in signing discharge petitions to force a House vote on three critical pieces of gun violence prevention legislation.
Specifically, Frost signed discharge petitions for legislation designed to prohibit the sale, transfer, manufacture, and importation of semiautomatic weapons (H.R. 698, Assault Weapons Ban) and to close the Charleston Loophole (H.R. 2403 Enhanced Background Checks Act) and strengthen background checks for firearm sales (H.R. 715).
Following the signing, Frost joined Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and gun violence prevention champion Congresswoman Lucy McBath for a press conference to announce this action alongside advocates and gun violence prevention organizations.
In a statement, Rep. Frost says:
“Just yesterday we commemorated the 7th anniversary of one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history – a shooting that claimed 49 lives in my home of Central Florida.
“It’s no coincidence that today we honor the memory of these victims and the memory of all victims of gun violence with action.
“There is no reason why someone should be able to buy an assault weapon in this country after we’ve seen mass shooting after mass shooting come to fruition at the hands of a semiautomatic weapon. There’s no reason that we should not ensure enough time for a background check to take place before a firearm is sold in order to protect innocent lives.
“If Republicans in this chamber do not want to act, we will do everything in our power to force them to. We won’t relent in the fight to end gun violence.”
